As someone who leans left myself, it is fascinating how someone who "freed the slaves," really had a "conservative" ideology. I'm not sure his views on slavery had anything to do with human decency. I just think he had a really problem with people not being "free" in America.

Historians like to point out that he was abused physically and emotionally by his uneducated, bitter father. Lincoln led a laborious childhood, so maybe he saw shards of his own life in the life of slaves?

I was pretty mad they left this element of his life out of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

They're saving it for Terrence Malick's upcoming producing project, Green Blade Rising, which stars Diane Kruger as Lincoln's loving step mother and teacher.

She can be my loving anything.

Heavy-handed. Lacking of any subtlety. Stilted dialog. Spielberg.

Maybe it's just bad marketing, or it really does look as you all say.

Tony Kushner (the writer) and Spielberg did Munich together, so I'm going to give it a fair shot.

But yeah that is one terrible trailer.

Let's hope, Randy. I can be a Spielberg apologist (oddly because i'm not a huge fan or anything) from time to time, but I don't care for this trailer either.

i liked it. it has its hamfisted Spielbergy moments for sure, and Lincoln is a saint, but the story was a great one regardless. 7/10

But isn't "people not being free" directly in conflict with the concept of human decency?

Saw this last night. Beautiful film. Slow-moving, but poignant. Daniel Day-Lewis really deserves an award for that performance. Stellar.

One thing I will say is that I thought the editing/storyline could have been handled differently at times. In particular, Joseph Gordon-Levitt seemed like an awkward fit. Also not sure how I felt about Tommy Lee Jones.

Daniel Day Lewis is as they all say. I don't think the movies has ever seen an actor like him before. The only crime is that Joaquin Phoenix's performance in The Master will probably be forgotten this year. Shame.

Greating acting all around. Tim Blake Nelson was the stand out for me. He was fun.

Of course the movie had its routine Spielbergian moments, like John Williams' music swells, that try hard to tug on your heart strings. I could have went without the rushed assassination sequence in the last 10 minutes, but oh well.

One thing I particularly liked is that this movie (as does any close reading of American political history, but hey, Americans don't read) completely debunks the idea that there was any golden age of American politics were there was no corruption and back-room dealing.

Quote:
"The greatest measure in the nineteenth century was passed by corruption, aided and abetted by the purest man in America."
