It aint a question of "if" only of "when." And I'm hoping sooner than later. I'll let you know as soon as I start.

Some good quotes just for fun. Ive probably posted them before

Det. Stan Bolander: It's hard to meet single woman on this job. You meet plenty of widows, but the timing just don't seem right.

Det. Frank Pembleton: You know, every day I get out of bed and drag myself to the next cup of coffee. I take a sip and the caffeine kicks in. I can focus my eyes again. My brain starts to order the day. I'm up, I'm alive. I'm ready to rock. But the time is coming when I wake up and decide that I'm not getting out of bed. Not for coffee, or food or sex. If it comes to me, fine. If it won't, fine. No more expectations. The longer I live, the less I know. I should know more. I should know the coffee's killing me. You're suspicious of your suspicions? I'm jealous, Kay; I'm so jealous. You still have the heart to have doubts. Me? I'm going to lock up a 14-year-old kid for what could be the rest of his natural life. I got to do this. This is my job. This is the deal. This is the law. This is my day. I have no doubts or suspicions about it. Heart has nothing to do with it any more. It's all in the caffeine.

Det. John Munch: From the tracks on his arms, large caliber wound, proximity to a heroin market... I'd say it was a heated dispute about the symbolism of red and blue in 18th-century French romantic poetry.

I love the usage of jump cuts in this television series.

It might not be obviously great if you only watch a couple episodes but once you're familiar with the characters it's pretty cool.

How does this compare to the wire

Personally, I kind of enjoy it more. For the most part, it doesn't follow the same type of season long story arc's, but it blends some arcs over 3-4 episodes with individual episode stories. You also get to know the characters as people a little deeper (my opinion here) than you do the wire. A lot more philosophical discussion between people than you really see on the Wire, which is generally discussion centered around the case/the department/the game. There are a lot of similarities, beyond the cast (for which there is a lot of crossover). For instance, there is a story line through season 5 (i think) about a criminal named Luther Mahoney (who later plays the medical examiner on the wire), which is very similar to Avon Barksdale. The cast rotates a bit more, but it never feels forced, until the end. Obviously the language is not as gritty as the wire, but ive never missed it.

A really simplified way of looking at is
The Wire follows the Cops and the Criminals and the Junkies and The Politics
The Corner follows the Criminals and Junkies more in depth
Homicide Follows the Cops.

and its all the more interesting because it is based on a book, and real life people.

Skitch, what are your thoughts about the early episode "Three Men and Adena"? I've been enjoying this show well enough, but this one is the first truly great episode I've seen. You say that this show is about the cops, and it is, but this one lets the viewer in to how much of this show is about the suspects and the crimes as well. There were a couple of really great monologues in the interrogation room. Pembleton showed us his tender side too.

Its been mentioned before in this thread, that the Three Men and Adena episode is one of the very early standouts. The intensity of the situation is really apparent in this one, and is based entirely on the true story. Its almost a word for word recreation of the book. In fact, i believe Orpheus posted a link to a story that listed it as "Best Episode in a Bottle" in television history. The urgency
Spoiler: show
and the lack of satisfying resolution
are apparent throughout the whole episode. The outcome never really is in question while watching it, but Homicide never needs a SHOCKING twist, or crazy ending. A couple episodes benefit from it, but its not needed in the same way the finite Guilty/Not Guilty defines most cop shows. Homicide though is not about "great episodes"- there are some, for sure (the AC in the station house, the 3 episode JMJ arc, the 2 episode introduction of Kellerman, Crosetti, and a couple of others)- it is about enjoying and appreciating the ride, and not counting on the resolution for satisfaction.

Pembleton and Bayliss were one of the best cop duos on TV. There really was no formula to this show other than the homicide count at the end of a show. One of my favorite episodes was when Pembleton is called down to the subway to investigate a crime. The victim is pinned between a car and the wall and isn't dead yet, and all through the episode, he's talking to the guy like nothing happened.

Good show and beats the crap out of L&O and CSI.

I am starting to feel like this is some organized, complicated christmas gift from RM to me. Like everyone has secretly decided to watch the show, and after years of pleading everyone is on board :heartbeat: :luv: :heartbeat: :luv: :heartbeat: :luv:
