I don't usually walk out of movies, and I didn't hate it or anything. We were trying to decide between this or Inglorious Basterds before we left and this one just didn't seem so great after the first 25 min or so. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience with the beginning of the film and then went on to enjoy it. I'm trying to decided whether or not it's worth it for me to go back.

I didn't have that exact feeling during the first 25 minutes, however I can admit that although I wasn't enjoying the movie up until that point, but I was interested in it, mostly because I'd heard the movie gets past the mockumentary setup and turns into a "real movie." A badass one at that.
It takes a turn at about the point you walked out and becomes a true narrative story. But, if you can't get past the aliens or the fact that humans were able to transcribe their language then I don't know what to tell you. The fact that humanity has been interacting with them for 30 years suspends my disbelief enough.

yeah man, minute 26 is where it really starts picking up. I'm not trying to be facetious, but if you would just stuck it out a bit longer you would have seen the real meat of the movie.

Lol, you left after 25 minutes and now want someone to convince you to go back? Did you even read the thread? Seriously... LOL. Maybe GI Joe would be more up your alley.
I never understood why people leave movies. I mean maybe if it's too gruesome or something, but you payed to see it, why not at least laugh at the rest of it.

The money is a sunk cost. Why waste valuable time on top of it?
Ive walked out of two movies. Last Action Hero, and Out To Sea
Last Action Hero ranks somewhere in the middle of Arnold movies. It isn't remotely as great as stuff like Predator and Commando, but it isn't complete shit like End of Days.

I don't know what the big deal is about walking out of one movie that you're not really liking and going to another movie that you wanted to see anyways. I wouldn't have walked out if I didn't know that Inglorious Basterds (which I wanted to see equally as much as District 9) was playing next door. I don't know why you all think that is so ludicrous. I also don't really see how that means I'd enjoy GI Joe. I did read the rest of the thread and I just wanted to state my grievances with the first 1/4 of the movie to see if it picked up after that. Guess that somehow makes me an idiot without an attention span.

almost everyone in this thread already said the first 30 minutes or so were really slow... maybe you missed the 5 or so times that was said? in any case, people that have any kind of attention span for movies don't generally get up and leave after 25 minutes and then ask if they should go back and watch the rest it wasn't enough that most everyone in here said they loved it?
Usually I don't disagree with the forum on movies...but lately...
I saw the movie on Friday. I thought it was good, but nothing spectacular. I was really worried about the first 25 minutes going into it from what everyone had said on the board...but I guess I don't see what the big deal is...
What was everyone expecting it to be? I thought the first 25 minutes was a great lead in for the movie. I didn't think it was too slow either. It provided a good amount of background, while still allowing the rest of the movie to fill in the rest of the gaps. It was an interesting perspective and I found myself getting drawn into it from how it provided the background information. It wasn't fast, but it wasn't slow either.
How else could it have been done?
I guess I don't think one part of the movie stands out from the other. Just about every aspect of it was above average, but not one aspect of it was great. There could have been more character and plot development for sure. The special effects were good, not overdone, not overly snazzy that it makes you laugh, but I dunno... I hated the ridiculously cheezy stereotypical go-tee'd military people.
I guess one thing that bothers me is that the prawns have all these weapons, but they don't really use them to fight back. They're a superior race, but they just succomb to the conditions they were forced in to. The climax wasn't all too exciting either.
On the bright side, I think the undoubted sequel has a lot of potential upside compared to this one.

Ebert said the beginning was the best part.
I love Ebert. I've always considered him our finest critic, and I've read his reviews consistantly ever since I was in grade school...but the guy is only half there now a days. It used to mean something to get a ***+ review from him...but now he hands them out constantly to some really bad films.
