This was a fuckin cool movie. I'm happy to admit a full on mancrush on Ryan Gosling, and the soundtrack was excellent. Sounded like Scarface but it worked really well.

I :heartbeat: Ryan :) :luv: :luv:

Is it still a mancrush if you're gay?

Lenny, I was sparing some consideration for my fellow RMer's sensitivities by putting an acceptable phrase upfront rather than the lurid graphic sexathon I was mentally depicting..but fuck that, he's a man men wanna be. We can all admit mancrush is allowed on Gosling.

Maybe this is a good time to say that my mancrush list is getting bigger all the time?

There you go, a real admission in place of your phoney one Dime.

I'm not exactly sure what to make of this. The whole time I was watching I was thinking, "Eh, Gosling's like a zombie" and the relationship with Irene felt weird, but then I was super-invested in all the characters by the end. I dunno, it didn't blow me away but I feel like it will linger with me for a while.

And of course, fucking gorgeous cinematography.

Beautifully shot. Great soundtrack. Amazing tension. Brilliant performances. Gosling and Mulligan both (even when limited) continue to exceed my expectations. They constantly impress. Cranston is great as well, as usual. Loved the pace.

Way too hyper violent at times. Clashing genres? Does't matter. I was invested. But it is a little hollow in places. And I think a different cast sinks this movie. The script is fair at best. The plot is obvious and shopworn. Nothing new. But it's better than average, for sure.

Give it a B- overall.

I saw this last night on Netflix and really enjoyed it. Everything was done just right without the movie trying to be something it wasn't.

Also, I loved how the text in the credits looked exactly like a Cinemax After Dark movie. I kept expecting Jayden Cole to pop-up.

I agree completely. Lower the acting talent just a little bit and it's not very good. Luckily they basically got our generation's versions of Paul Newman and Audrey Hepburn.

this movie is 200 percent more lame than the rest of the directors discography

to put things in perspective and use an analogy that amateur contrarians will understand, this movie is like what avocado is to pearl jam

I love hyperbole as much as the next glorified_version, but let's not be insane.

I was talking with the wife about Ryan Gosling the other night. Crazy Stupid Love came on the HBO. And I looked at her and I said, "You know... Gosling is like Cary Grant. But, you know, can really act. That's what so awesome about him."

She agreed. I'm not saying anyone else has to. But he's got the charm, the smooth, stupid, clean-cut good looks - the confidence and the rugged appeal of Cary Grant - but is willing (and able) to get fucking dirty when he needs to.

Ryan Gosling is a hell of an actor. He's still too young to say for sure yet, but maybe better than Newman.

Yeah, I stand by that comparison. Mulligan is amazing too and her first big role in An Education was very reminiscent of Hepburn. Everything I' ve seen her in she's just delightful. Like I said, without those two being so charming and magnetic this movie would never work.
