Get Calibre, your library worries will be over (if you ever run into any, that is). It's an e-book management program that allows you to convert any ebook into whatever format you need to, it interfaces with my Paperwhite with no hassles at all.
Lots of unintentional humor in that narration of that video.
That app does look useful, but that's not what I was talking about. As I understand it, with Amazon devices, you can access an e-library full of books that you can own fo' free, temporarily. With Amazon Prime, right?

The original Kindle's battery is insane.
It seems to drain quite a bit when it's sleeping, which doesn't make much sense to me. If I'm actually reading it seems to last very well, yet if I leave it untouched for a day or two it's frequently completely run down when I open it up.
Oh wow.
Is that a symptom of the cover you mentioned that puts it to sleep when you close it, do you think?

Oh, I have no idea. I just buy anything I want to read.

Can you "power it off" or just "put it to sleep?"
As far as I can tell, you can only put it to sleep - there's no way to actually turn it off.

Good to know.
I was thinking about upgrading soon. But I love my original Kindle and it still works really well. Maybe there's no point. I go back and forth.
A touchscreen is tempting, though. The old Kindle is so cumbersome when it comes to web browsing and such.

One thing I'd be worried about with any e-reader is that I fear that I might not be as disciplined as I currently am about finishing a book that I start.

Weirdly, I find I'm sticking with books a lot more since moving to an e-reader.

I find I'm really good about finishing a book on Kindle because no matter where I am, I have another book ready to go if I so desire.
Sometimes I pace out books based on traveling. So if I know I'm going to finish before I have a chance to get at another book, I'll take my time and read less. That way I don't have to lug around multiple books. If that makes sense.

I wonder why that is.
I find reading physical books pretty inconvenient, they're often awkward to take anywhere with me. I often abandon books because I don't get a chance to read them for a few days and I find myself out of the "groove" of where I was up to. With my Kindle, it's very portable and it's right there when I open it up exactly where I left off. It's just made reading easier and more enjoyable.

Totally agree.
Though, I still love the sensation of a physical book. There's nothing quite like it for me. The feel, the smell, it's more intimate somehow.

I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the Fire once you're more familiar with it. Sometimes I think I want one. But then I turn around and think I'd just like a dedicated e-reader without all the whistles and bells and video.

I'd like to add that it hasn't been doing this in the last week or so, it's lasting much longer. Perhaps the battery is more "worn in" now and handles downtime better or maybe the recent firmware update helped fix something. Either way, I retract my complaint!
