I caught some of the highlights of CR today on the news channels cause I wasn't gonna watch the show. But from what I did see, I think some of his comments were tasteless.

Rock was Rock, but toned down. It was okay, could have been better. He was funny in the bit where he went to the Magic Johnson Theater. Here's the problem, he's not the right guy for the Oscars. This is not his type of crowd and he certainly didn't get the right kind of reaction. I think Letterman is the only one that they should have host this thing, maybe Conan in a few years. You have to have the right blend of humor and class to pull it off and Rock is just not the right guy. If he wasn't always up for an award I'd say Morgan Freeman would be very good too.

I love when, in discussions about comedians whose entire schtick is to get people pissed off and instigate, those involved in the conversation point out that the person is "tasteless."

That will never happen again. I for one thought he did a pretty good job and was relatively funny. The vast majority of America seemed to disagree. He's never going to get the offer a second time.

Uma, Oprah.
Those two words repeated over and over doomed Letterman's second chances.

Nah. They told Letterman that night after the show that he would never host again. I can't even remember why.
Oh, yeah. He showed his nipple.

"let's once again refer to the example of The Gap...now, if you were short 70 trillion dollars in your cash register. you know, in debt. well, chances are, you'd be in big trouble! but not bush!"
another one...
"let's pretend this is The Gap. Soon you go to war with Banana Republic because you find out they're making Toxic Tank Tops. Oh hell no. So after you go and invade them, you find out they didn't even make tank tops in the first place! You'd be in troubel for that...but not bush..."
i probably butchered it, but i got most of it. and i laughed hard at that one.
I thought he was relatively funny. I never barreled over in laughter but I liked how he called out bad actors and their bad movies (including himself).
I think hollywood makes so manny crappy movies these days and stuff these crappy actors in them that its good Chris Rock addressed the craze. That whole Chronicles of Riddick thing was funny as was calling colin farel a bum. or whatever...it was good stuff

And that's one of the things I found hilarious. Especially how he just kept sticking with it, even when he wasn't getting the laughs. That's what I love about Letterman's show (at least when I watched it consistently). The random little joke that he wouldn't let die. Like rotating pies.
I have one of those sense of humors where something can be funny, get old cause it drags on, then be spectacularly funny because the person/show/writer just keeps at it. i.e. Sideshow Bob and the rakes.
