Can someone recommend me some of his films? I haven't seen any. I've been feeling artsy and pretentious lately.

You should look into Breathless, generally considered to be one of the progenitors of French New Wave Cinema. If you're interested in the movement from either an analytical or historical standpoint you should probably see this at least once.
The only other Godard film I can think of right now is Band of Outsiders, and to be honest I don't really remember much about it. All I can remember is that I enjoyed it much more than Breathless, probably because it seemed more like a film rather than a didactic presentation of the tenets of the movement. I know that's not really much of a recommendation, but it's the best I've got.

I rented Breathless, and purchased Band of Outsiders and Le Vie se Vie, "My Life to Live," from Amazon so they should be here in like the next couple of weeks.
Thanks for the recommendations

I should know I am french. And how about Francois Truffaud?
Godard is my introduction to French new wave. Renois, Truffaut, and Cocteau are next.

Well, Renoir is not new wave, he is from the 30's/40's old school but his work is brilliant.
Renoir, I recommend you to start with "the grand illusion", a french classic & masterpiece, and Boudu Saved from drowning". I think Renoir is the best french movie director that ever lived..
Truffaud, I recommend to start with "the four hundred blows" and "farenheit 451", my fav. also "Jules & Jim"
Cocteau: I would recommend: "the beauty and the beast", his masterpiece and beautiful movie, "the eternal return", very chilling and "the strange ones".
I didn't like "Orpheus", I would say avoid it, you'll get a headache!!!!!!!!

Whoa, thanks.
I watched "Breathless" last night (supposedly one of the most influencial films ever made) and I really liked. I'll probably watch it again before I take it back to the video store, and I'll probably buy it. I can see why it was so original.

I watched Breathless for the first time today. I thought it was pretty good. I am going to rewatch it with the commentary on to get a better perspective of why it was so influential. Plus, there are a ton more Godard films I want to see. God I love Netflix.

the big thing about the french new wave was that they didn't know what they were doing, so they accidentally were really groudbreaking because they said fuck the rules...
that's where they got jump cuts, things like not having a consitent plot, genre mixing, addressing the audience, they had really cheesy and cheap production value which ended up being a totally different style, also they were big on handheld camera, which is rampant today
they just decided "hey we like movies, lets make one!"

Yeah, the New Wave remains my favorite film movement. I saw an interview of Godard (on the Band of Outsiders DVD) and Godard was saying how they wanted to show the French film industry and Hollywood that taboos and rules didn't mean anything at all and that directors could do whatever they wanted.
I'd like to do a Godard movie thread where I highlight some of my favorites, like somebody did for Ingmar Bergman a while back. I ordered La Chinoise and I still have yet to see Pierre Le Fou (which for some reason my Netflix isn't carrying ). But he made 15 films in less than a decade which is just completely unheard of by today's standards. And the cool thing is, most of them are really quite good.
