If this isn't cool with the mods I'm sorry, go ahead and lock it. I just wanted a place to discuss the best programs/websites,etc. and also which version of a certain movie is best.

NO DIRECT LINKS TO TORRENTS OR OTHER DIRECT DOWNLOADS

I was looking for Sin City with ISOhunt and now I'm downloading the Xvid of what is supposedly a screener. I noticed that the versions with the most seeders are the CD versions. Why are people still putting these out on (S)VCD??? Divx/Xvid gives smaller files and better quality, and DVD burners are abundant enough to offer DVDs. Why is it that most movies are first released on VCD still?

I'm pretty sure you can't discuss this here.

It's been discussed in other threads. We have threads about torrent sites and about P2P software. What's the difference?

Most people still have CD burners not DVD burners.

Threads about downloading copyright material? Or just live shows?

The majority of people dont want to download or seed 4GB worth of data at one time.

downloading movies = being too cheap to pay 5 bucks to see a movie during a matinee.

I don't download movies anymore, too paranoid. I really wouldn't worry about talking about it on a message board though.

I have not and probably never will download a movie. Not only do I not have the time to wait for the thing to download I worry about the quality. Plus, nothing beats going to see it in the theater, even if the price might be a little steep.

I'm sure the MPAA has people working for them that go around the internet looking for sites and groups that share movies. And I'm sure that they find a lot of sites through message boards. I would hate for RM to get shut down for providing links to places to download movies, music, or software, even if they are links to torrent sites rather than direct links.

I hate watching stuff on my computer. I don't even watch the DVDs I own on the computer. Plus, if it's something I really want to see ... why hunker down in my office to watch a teeny-tiny version of a cool movie, when I can get blown away in the theatre a couple of days later.

Movies seem different to me than music. Seeing it in the theatre seems like a "concert." Would you download a concert video when you could go see it live for $5?

first off, i guarantee whatever you're downloading right now isn't a screener.

for cam and telesync (movies recorded in a theater with a camcorder) "releases" they still do them in VCD and SVCD because

1.) there's no need for higher quality.
2.) VCD and SVCD will play in your DVD player.

for #1, it's pretty much self-explanatory. You're watching a movie recorded with a camcorder in a movie theater. If you put it on DVD it won't look any better, plus the movie will be released on DVD in a few months.

for #2, it's just compatibility. sure there are now DVD players that will play divx or xvid, but every dvd player i've ever seen will play a VCD (as long as it can read the CDR). same reason albums are ripped and distributed in MP3 format when there are better codecs.

my dad used to buy downloaded movies from a guy he worked with for $2. they were perfect...the sound and picture quality was amazing. it looked like he'd burned the movie from another DVD. i couldn't believe how great the quality was.

well, the dude got arrested...but my dad got around 60 movies from him; many haven't been released yet.

I can get movies early from a "distributor" if I want, but I usually don't. If I'm really interested in a movie, I'd rather not waste my viewing experience with a lower quality showing of it. I'd rather see it at it's best. I've got a few movies I'm just casually interested in though, where I had no intention of seeing it in the theatre. I could obviously get them myself, but like someone else said, I don't like watching them on the PC. Plus, I'd rather not go through the hassle of downloading and converting them to either a DVD or VCD.

Actually the version of Sin City I just watched was definetly a screener, or taken from an original digital recording of the film. The video and sound is to high of quality to be off of a camcorder, and I have seen those shitty camcorder versions. And before people bitch, I did see it opening night in the theater, and I will be buying the DVD whenever it comes out. I never download movies really, but I wanted to check it out again. Considering I will end up spending upwards of 30 bucks on the film eventually, I feel pretty guilt free about having a substandard copy in the meantime.
