I haven't seen it. But I am hearing good stuff about it. Should I just buy it right away (which I don't normally do) or should i rent it first?

Some people hate the hell out of it, so I would rent it first. I own both versions of it so I think it is kick ass, but it isn't for everyone.

If I hadn't heard anything about it, I may have found it enjoyable, but I think it's completely overrated.

I'd say rent it first, but I'm the kind of person who'd never buy a movie I haven't seen.

Rent the original, not the director's cut.

I have a friend that always buys movies before seeing them. I don't understand that. Rent first. Buy later.

It's a great film, but as others have said, definitely not for everyone.

What's different about the director's cut, and why is the original better?

The Directors cut just explains a bit more, and kind of ruins a lot of the mystery in the original version. It also just doesn't flow nearly as well, and some of the changes in the music are for the worse. The Directors Cut is still a great film, but I would reccomend seeing it after the original. Watching the Directors Cut would be like listening to a new Pearl Jam song while having Eddie explain to you what it meant. Kind of takes away the emotional attachment.

The thinking is, if you have a good idea that you are going to like a film, why spend $3 to rent it, then by the time you've seen it, its no longer on its initial week sales, so it costs $20 to buy instead of $15...

which is a waste of $8 if you were sure you were going to like it anyways... which means as long as you are right 2 out of 3 times, you should be fine.
