Ones in bold I've seen. Pretty unimpressive list, but it was only compiled by 2 or 3 critics I think. There are some great films on there, a lot of films I've never heard of....but I think they sold a lot of European directors short - no Bergman, etc.

No Ran, Seven Samurai, or Rashomon, yet Finding Nemo?

Barry Lyndon was another odd inclusion as its usually regarded as not one of Kubrick's best pictures.

Garbage.

On the local news the other night, they showed from this list the "top" movie of each decade since the 20's.

I'm pretty sure Citizen Kane was the only one I've heard of....let alone seen.

The anchor made a comment about how whoever made the list was being "snooty" and I fully agree.

These "lists" are crap a lot of the time.

This is some of the stupidest criticism I've ever heard, in this thread. Stick to the simple stuff guys.

Total fucking insanity. A true story of a Conquistador expedition into the amazon jungle in the 16th century in search for El Dorado. The entire crew basically gets wiped out or becomes blindly obsessed with greed. The style of the director is totally unique, the acting is among the best ever, and locations are mesmerizing. Think a different take on Heart of Darkness.

Actually, there are at least two Bergmans on the list - Persona and Smiles of a Summer Night. And they got Kurosawa with Yojimbo and Ikiru, the latter of which is one of his more distinctive films - and it happens to be my favorite of his (though I also love the ones you mention and would love to see him better represented).

I kind of like the list overall, if only for the fact that they throw in a few of the lesser known works of important directors. Mouchette for Bresson, Ikiru for Kurosawa, Persona and Smiles for Bergman, Barry Lyndon for Kubrick and Notorious for Hitchcock. And any list that includes Miller's Crossing, which is possibly my favorite Coen film, is worth at least a good look.

This strength may also be the big weakness of the list though. It seems to be almost more useful for people who are already familiar with a lot of classic and world cinema, giving them some titles that they might use to branch out from the tried and true Seven Samurai, Seventh Seal, 2001, and Rear Window kinds of things you usually see. One could easily make a case that for a list like this, many of those films should be there, but then, this list loses its distinctiveness.

Anyway, FWIW, I've seen 50 of the 100:

The Apu Trilogy (1955, 1956, 1959)
The Awful Truth (1937)
Baby Face (1933)
Bande à part (1964)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980)
Blade Runner (1982)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Brazil (1985)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Camille (1936)
Casablanca (1942)
Charade (1963)
Children of Paradise (1945)
Chinatown (1974)
Chungking Express (1994)
Citizen Kane (1941)
City Lights (1931)
City of God (2002)

I would say there are at least 10, though I think there are probably more, since I am not familiar with everything there. And my only thought about it is that it is infinitely harder to do great comedy than great drama. A great comedy is one of the rarer things out there, I think. All of that to say, I totally agree with your second sentence, though I think a fun and playful film can also have serious undertones.

I've seen about 65 of those movies and i only count 2 unless you want to count GoodFellas, Chinatown, or basically any of the movies that make you laugh a couple of times in 2 hours. What are the comdies that you saw on it?

This is not intended to be comprehensive:

The Awful Truth
Charade
City Lights
Dr. Strangelove
Drunken Master II (Jackie Chan)
A Hard Days Night
His Girl Friday
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Lady Eve
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Sherlock, Jr.
The Shop Around the Corner
Smiles of a Summer Night
Some Like it Hot
Swing Time

Mind you, I'm not saying any of these are particularly funny or great comedies (aside from City Lights, The Lady Eve, Shop Around the Corner, and Strangelove), but they are intended to be funny.

ive seen 12 of those.

how come every movie list seems like it was made by snobs who pick abstract films, that no one has heard of, and claim them the greatest movie ever, just to make you feel bad about your movie appreciation.

some of those are borderline comedies, most of them aren't funny at all. But that's just my taste. I did part of my these on His Girl Friday, i defintely didn't laugh at all. Same goes for about 8 of the movies you listed. Would it hurt them to put a comedy from the 70's through 2000 in there? It's definitely snobbery at its finest. I think most movie goers would rather see a classic comedy over any "serious' movie.
