One of the things that makes a TV show great are its side characters. The Simpsons, for example, have hundreds and they all serve a pretty funny purpose to the show.

Of all the side characters though, I think Seinfeld is tops. Their side characters can be categorized in groups (Jerry's girlfriends, adversaries, etc). My favorite "group" of side characters from any TV show are George and Elaine's bosses. Those were some funny-ass characters.

Who are your faves? Discuss.

Not to mention Newman, the ultimate supporting character.

the best boss on seinfeld was mr. kruger.

the best supporting character is jackie chiles.

peterman rules all bosses. as for supporting characters, jackie is good, but i think the frank/estelle combo give every other supporting character a run for their money. newman and jackie are right after that though.

See, I din't know if I would consider any of them outside of Frasier as supporting cast. The rest became such an integral part of the show. It was an ensemble. I consider their supporting cast to be Paul, the restaurant owner upstairs, Kevin McHale, the rival bar owner, Harry Anderson's character, and the numerous others.

Seinfeld wins in my book. The show was genius, and I think the greatest sitcom of all time. The recurring side characters only added to how amazing it was. Cheers is second when it somes to supporting casting. Counting the bolts in Boston Garden remains one of my favorite episodes of TV ever.

The Simpsons is in another category by itself.

I mean, the magic of Malcolm Jamal-Warner and Tempestt Bledsoe? You can't beat that. Then you throw in a Lisa Bonet and it's on hit.

The other day I was just thinking about how I miss watching Alice, The Jeffersons, and One Day at A Time. Oh don't forget Silver Spoons.
