There has to be some directors that you really like.
It´s not necesary that you love all the director´s films, as long as there is at least one that you really LOVE, I think it´s enough.
I will start mentioning some of my favourites
Gus Van Sant: I love Elephant and Good Will Hunting (I didn´t like that much "Finding Forrester"...)
Lars Von Trier: his style in Dogville is amazing.... it´s a long movie and it made me feel stress, but it´s ART.

Kevin Smith: Clerks - JSBSB (Man, I hated Jersey Girl, and the stuff he produces is SHIT!)
Quentin Tarantino: Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill I
Michael Moore: Roger & Me > Bowling For Columbine > Fahrenheit 9/11 (He's losing steam.)
Christopher Nolan: Momento, Insomnia, Batman Begins
Judd Apatow: Producer/Director - Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared (he was really more of a producer and this was TV, but he did some direction and these shows kicked ass!)
