I'm not going to get into specifics, nor did I click the link, but pwned came from a typo in a MMORPG a long time ago. The screen was supposed to say "_____ got owned" but some programmer fucked up and it became "_____ got pwned." Thus the craze. "N00b," "noob," "newb" and all other variations have been around since the inception of the word "newbie," which has no known birthdate as far as I know but has existed since long before online gaming, I'd assume.
