I don't know that it's "better." I just know that, in some respects I enjoy it more. Obviously the language is not as authentic as in the Wire, but still feels very "real." I think I just dig the characters more. The crimes and criminals are nothing more than fodder to develop the detectives, and to illustrate the dynamics between them.

The Wire could be "spoiled" in a way that Homicide can't. In the Wire the destination is just as important as the journey. In Homicide, there isn't always that closure, or that ending to a case. Instead most of the show is just the interactions, the dialogue and the development. Be it an over the top impassioned speech from Pembleton, or slightly urban gallows joke from Lewis, or a Richard Belzer style conspiracy theory from Munch... it's all part of a certain charm that the wire doesn't have.. and that doesn't take away from the Wire in the least bit. I also think Homicide brings you in a bit more emotionally, maybe because with a larger pool of crimes to choose from, its more likely one might hit home- especially because they rarely gave you the ending you were hoping for when it came to crimes involving kids.

The way I see it, if your favorite parts of Pulp Fiction are the Jules/Vincent scenes or the Vincent/Mia scenes, and you have a preference for philosophy, you'll think Homicide is great.

Also, there's plenty of unintentional humor brought on by dated production and bit characters.

The thing about Frank leaving the force is you don't see it coming at all.

You dont see nearly anything that happens in that 2parter coming. Like I've said, it's the high point of a great show for me.

If they had ended the series there, with the movie (slightly altered to ignore the season 7 plot lines), it would have been... amazing.

So the other day I tweeted that watching an episode of Law and Order reminded me how much better Homicide is.. and mentioned Kellerman, Munch and Luther Mahoney. I got a response from Luther Mahoney saying thank you!! I indirectly talked to a cast member of Homicide Life on the Street. I'm pretty excited about this, folks.
