The US Coast Guard is investigating the disappearance of the longtime boyfriend of 1970s "Grease" star Olivia Newton-John, a spokesman said.
Cameraman Patrick Kim McDermott, 48, who has been involved romantically with Newton-John for nine years, has been missing since he left for an overnight Pacific Ocean fishing trip June 30 in San Pedro south of here, according to the Los Angeles police.
He was only noticed missing when he failed to show up for a family event on July 6, the police said.
"It is under investigation," Coast Guard spokesman Nathan Henise told AFP, adding that it was not clear if McDermott had left the marina on a boat or not.
The Coast Guard together with police discovered McDermott's car parked at a San Pedro marina, and found his personal belongings inside a boat.
"We are treating him as a missing person. We still don't know if he went overboard," Henise said.
Australian Newton-John, 56, is famous for her role opposite John Travolta in the 1978 smash movie-musical "Grease", and had numerous US hit records.
Newton-John divorced her former husband of ten years in 1995. She met McDermott in Los Angeles a year later during the filming of a commercial.

I heard this story on the news. How does a boat go out and come back with less people, and no one notices? Between this news story and the movie Open Water, I'm beginning to think we may have a great need for checklists among those in the nautical professions.

Jokes aside, this is a seriously fucked up story. She's been with this guy for YEARS, and he just disappears off a fishing boat? I don't understand this. If there were few people on the boat, someone would have noticed a person missing. If there were a lot of people, someone would have seen the guy fall overboard.
WTF?

here's some information about the boat and trip from a yahoo! story:
Quote:
The fishing boat carried 23 passengers and three crew members, said Frank Liversedge, landing manager at the 22nd Street Pier where sport-fishing boats launch.
He said the trip was so uneventful that crew members could not remember what McDermott looked like.
"The crew has no idea, they can't remember anything at all about the guy," Liversedge said. "There's no reason for anyone to remember him. Nothing took place on the boat."
tomorrow, you can go and read the transcript on the rita cosby msnbc page. someone was saying he had some serious gambling debt and might have just walked off the boat.
