I am going to purchase a digital camera. I have about $600 to spend, and this includes tax and a decent-sized memory stick. I suppose I should go for # of megapixels first. Size is also an issue, because the smaller the camera the more pics I'll probably take. But most important is quality, I want nice, sharp, richly detailed photos.

I like the features just fine and it was recommended to me at the store, but is the design too girly?
this got pretty good reviews on some websites
Can someone recommend me some non-Sony ones please?

I owned a cybershot once and didn't find it girly. It took nice pictures. If you want a compact size then they do make a good camera. That is pretty standard fare for a smaller "point & shoot" camera.
The second camera you have there is an SLR-style camera and is probably bulkier and may have more manual features. They are usually designed for the mid-level consumer who has some photography knowledge, but can be good for learning as well.
Try going to http://www.dpreview.com and do a side by side comparison of the models you are looking at.
If you want to look at other models, i would suggest Fuji or Canon, but any of the major brand names make good cameras. Just stay away from HP and the like. If you want to see what a Fuji can do, i own an S5000 and most of the pictures that i posted in the Photography Thread were taken with that or the Cybershot.

Try them out first, and get one that doesn't take FOREVER to set itself up to take another picture (if you're using the flash). I swear, my damn camera has a ten second delay between shots to allow the flash to recharge. It's more annoying than you would think.

I've got the S500, which is really great.

The Sony Cybershots are reliable. I've had a 3.2 megapixel for 3+ years and haven't had any problems with it. My sister recently got a 7.2 megapixel and the picture quality is amazing compared to mine.

don't know much about point-and-shoots. I use Canon SLRs (have a 10d and a 20d) and they're second to none in quality. For what you're doing, anything over 5mp is probably a bit of overkill because with 5 mp you can blow things up to 16x20 pretty well and most consumers rarely need anything larger than an 8x10 anyway.

I think I'm gonna go with the Canon Powershot S2IS...5 megapixels. 5 Megapixels is a pretty professional level of quality, correct? Its more expensive than the Sony, but its got the 12x zoom and few other features.
