This is the time of year in which I veg out on slashers. Usually, I end up skipping the well known stuff in favor of the grimier, under-the-radar stuff. Some favorites:

Friday the 13th 1-4 (ok, so these are definitely not under-the-radar, but fuck it)
The Burning (finally out on dvd)
My Bloody Valentine (although this one was completely butchered to please the MPAA)
Curtains (which still hasn't gotten a dvd release)
The House on Sorority Row
The Prowler
Sleepaway Camp
Terror Train

Hopefully the Burning will be coming to me from Netflix pretty soon.

And this is the ultimate time of the year to veg out on slashers, you gotta love it!

Tonight should be Evil Aliens, not really slasher, but hopefully good horror.

I just got my copy from Amazon today. I didn't preorder it because I figured I'd be able to find it somewhere around here, but NO ONE had it. :x

Yeah I haven't seen it out anywhere either. I'm hoping I manage to get it before it goes on a long wait on netflix, but there's so much stuff I'm trying to get this month. It's at number 3 right now I believe.

Goddamnit, this thread deserves better than this.

Should have the Burning coming to me next.

Also, Evil Aliens was pretty bombastic, I enjoyed it.

The best of the friday ripoffs that came out in the early 80s. Excellent gore (by Tom Savini), great kills, and the first acting appearance of Jason Alexander. Pretty much impossible to find until the dvd came out earlier this month.

Seriously. I'm thinking it might pick up closer to Halloween.

I'm going to keep it alive with you bro.

Still not really slasher territory, but last night's movie was Return of the Living Dead. Got to drop it on two folks who had never seen it before.

There's discussion of some Friday the 13th's and Nightmare sequels for the weekend, and of course, the movie we're all talking about, the Burning.

definitely gonna try and check that out this month. I'm surprised I never heard of it.

I'll probably revisit some stuff I own, as well as ones my friend has left stay at my house. Re-Animator, the Evil Deads, Texas Chainsaw, Nightmare on Elm St. 1, Hellraiser, Wishmaster 1 & 2. I really need some more.

While not necessarily slasher, I really enjoyed Session 9. Kudos to all the recommendations I read for that.

Another good slasher I plan on seeing this month: Tourist Trap. No one remembers that one, but it's great.

I'd say tell me about it, but I can pretty much guess.

I dunno about that. It involves a crazy mannequin builder.

Ok then, tell me about it.

The set up is pretty standard, actually: kids are driving out in the middle of nowhere, their car breaks down, they stop at a creepy tourist trap (hence the title) and hilarity ensues. The House of Wax remake that came out a while back actually reminded me much more of this movie than the film on which it was supposed to be based (but don't hold that against this one). It came out a few months before the major glut of Friday/Halloween clones, and it tends to get overlooked, but it's one of the most competently made slashers. I guess that's not really high praise, but you get what I'm saying.

For you hardcore slasher fans, is there one movie that's pretty much universally accepted as the best or the most popular? I've never been into this subgenre at all and am just curious.

Halloween kind of started it all.
