this is a genre of film I'm not overly familiar with and would like to explore. I recently picked up The 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Police Story, but haven't had a chance to watch them yet.

Have you seen any of Bruce Lee's movies?

Enter the Dragon is a good place to start.

This is like my first post in months, but I do know a thing or two about martial arts movies. You made two excellent choices with 36th Chamber and Police Story. These are some others you may want to check out.

Police Story 2
Duel to the Death
Knockabout
The Magnificent Butcher
Master of the Flying Guillotine
The Prodigal Son
A Touch of Zen
Warriors Two
Come Drink With Me
Fist of Legend
Flash Point
Heroes of the East
Last Hurrah for Chivalry
The One-Armed Swordsman
Shanghai Express (aka. Millionaire's Express)
The Deadly Breaking Sword
Human Lanterns
Legendary Weapons of China
The Magic Blade
Shaolin Intruders
7 Grand Masters
Ninja Checkmate (aka. The Mystery of Chess Boxing)
Ninja in the Deadly Trap
The Victim (1980 version staring Sammo Hung)

That should be enough to keep you busy a while. I only listed ones that are easily available in the US on DVD. In fact I believe they're all on Netflix is you have an account there.

I second the nomination for Fist of Legend. It actually was the first movie I ever owned on DVD (I got to pick a free one when I bought my laptop).

I also recommend Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow). Not really mainstream KF fare, but it was friggin' hilarious.

I'd like to point out that I mentioned Master first.

And how could I forget the Street Fighter movies? Sonny Chiba is awesome.

I really don't like these movies. Although the part in Enter the Dragon where Bruce Lee punches a guy while bawking like a chicken is hilarious.
