The Get the Party Started singer pulled out of the Penelope Spheeris film earlier this year and, after much speculation, Deschanel was selected to take over the role.
The script focuses on former Rolling Stone writer David Dalton, who was once assigned to write a cover story comparing the troubled Joplin to Judy Garland.
Dalton accompanied the singer on a long tour, and his adventures have become the central plot for the film.
Deschanel has spent the past four months working with a vocal coach to help her mimic Joplin's gritty vocals, and she will sing all of Joplin's songs featured in the film.
According to producer Peter Newman, it has been a struggle to find an actress who could sing or a singer who could act. He says, ``Zooey is the first we found who excels at both.''

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm sure getting tired of musician biopics. It's not that I dislike them, but stop shoving the fucking things down my throat.

After Ray and Walk the Line, it seems like a very commercially and critically sensible thing to do. If whatever is coming up will maintain the quality of these two, then I have absolutely nothing against them being made. But I doubt that will happen.
I am very much looking forward to the Ian Curtis biopic directed by Anton Corbijn, though.

I like Walk the Line because it's about Johnny Cash, who I'm a huge fan of (even though the book was 1000x better). But is this Hollywood's new gimmick, the musical biopic? Like you inferred, I think they're just going to keep getting worse and worse and make the genre into a joke.

Hollywood's gimmick is whatever they think people will pay for.
