Possibly the best film of the 80s, Kurosawa's best film, and one of the greatest of all time. The cinematography, set designs, acting, costumes, and battle scenes are remarkable, but it isn't just a showy epic. It is a realization of Kurosawa's personal philosophies and characteristics as a film maker. I'd go so far as to say a better epic will never be made, ever again. I HIGHLY recommend this.

We finally agree on something. 8)

Kurosawa combines the main storyline of King Lear w/ elements of Macbeth (e.g., Lady Kaede = Lady Macbeth in the way she completely manipulates her husband as part of her plan to destroy the Ichimonji family) effortlessly.

The battle sequence in this film, which must be around twenty mintues long, is still spectacular.

One of my favourite movies.

I want to see this, I think I'm going to renew Netflix for the sole purpose of seeing films like this.

Fantastic, I made a post about this a few months ago, and I think it garnered one post and sank like a stone.

This is one of the best films ever.

I've read that even the Masterworks edition has problems w/ the transfer and w/ the picture on the screen.

The Criterion edition should blow this out of the water.

I'd still like to see it, but I was not at all impressed with Yojimbo or Seven Samurai, so I dunno.

"Like Kurosawa I make mad films: 'kay I don't make films,
But if I did they'd have a Samurai."

This is what immediately popped into my mind. Damn pop culture.

You may appreciate Ran more if you have read King Lear (and enjoyed it).

I'm looking forward to the extras.

Pfffft.

Actually, Yojimbo wasn't that bad. I just really disliked Seven Samurai.
