I read this book for school last year, and it is one of the best assigned books I've ever read. It's so simple and concrete in delievery (like a WWI Hemingway), but so powerful and telling. For a war with so few photographs and videos, its a great account.


I love WWI History. I think its ironic how the British government made a film to try and boost morale, and when people went to see it in theatres they were collapsing and crying during it. The government hoped that seeing the boys fighting valiantly would inspire pride, but instead the images of the dead and dying, and the horror of trench warfare dismayed people. Bear in mind this was the first video of war that anyone had ever seen, and it was incredibly shocking. They stopped showing it after a few days when they realized it was having the exact opposite of the desired effect.



Anyways, back to the point of the thread. Great great novel.

i read it a very long time ago, i think i'll pick it back up and read it again.

I love it, a really great piece of work.

a great insight into WWI...i really enjoyed it when I read it
