I'm not talking make-you-jump scares here, I'm talking the creepiest, most disturbing, stays-with-you-and-fucks-with-your-head movie of all time. And in my opinion, it is:
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Yeah, that's right. Now let's think about this. A space crew travels into deep space. Earth has aged hundreds of years, while they've aged only a few days. They go into hypersleep. They wake up crashing. One of them is a shriveled corpse. They find themselves deserted on a dessicated planet. Eventually, they find themselves being tormented by humanoid ape creatures. What Heston's character endures after this is pure fucking hell. Labatomies, torture...you name it. And that ending is the single biggest chiller I have EVER seen. It's so hopeless, so gloomy, so depressing.
That closing line is so powerful and unnerving: "Oh...damn you! Damn you all to hell!"
Fucking sends shivers down my spine.
And of course, it probably helps that Jerry Goldsmith provided the single most horrifying original score I've ever heard in my fucking life.
(Note: this isn't a thread to just post what you think the single scariest movie ever is, I want some discussion, here!)
to me the scariest movies are the one psychological ones, such as the shining or poltergiest
the shining i have yet to see in one sitting, i have seen it all, just in like 3 or 4 segments. to me the scariness is in the mental slippage as portrayed by mr nicholson.
blood and guts and friday the 13th scare tactics, while they work in the short term, long term its the movies that make you think scared that do it for me

The thing that pisses me off about the "scare you now and forget about you later" tactic is that its such a surface-scratcher. ANYBODY can pop out of a closet and freak you out. ANYBODY can make the music get real loud and creepy during a "frightening" sequence. Not everybody can make a movie that leaves you wondering what you believe and why the fuck that guy was moving so weird?

See, I absolutely adore The Shining and think it's a very frightening film, but it just doesn't scare ME. I think it would be scary as all fucking get out to be in that situation, but it takes a lot for a movie to scare me on any level higher than that. Planet of the Apes just constantly fucks with my mind whenever I think about it.

Which? Apes?
yes.
(by the way, my dad thinks king kong is the scariest move he's ever seen)

King Kong? That's an adventure film. I can't say I find it frightening.
Planet of the Apes is a whole 'nother beast.
yea, i've never seen king kong either, but he's a big fan.
so i suppose i should pick up 'apes' eh?

the movie is a bit of a psychological thriller also, but the part that freaks me up is when keifer wakes up in the coffin. it makes it hard for me to breathe when i see that part
