During the first half, I overwhelmed by how pretentious it seemed. I mean, I know it's Godard, but this was just too much. Flashing all of these seemingly random and self-consciously artsy title cards on screen in the middle of scenes, etc. But during the second half, I started to think about how these fit in with the film. The film is, as made very obvious, about "The Pepsi Generation", and I began to think that perhaps these sporadic title cards were meant to help stress the hectic lives these people lead by creating something of a hectic feel for the film.
So in the end, I found it to be a very affecting film, and one I definitely need to watch again. It does a terrific job of expressing just how lonely and disconnected people can feel in modern times. And thinking of how the film was made in '66, I can't help but feel that it was very ahead of its time.
And being a big Tarantino fan, it's always interesting to watch Godard and see all of the things that obviously influenced QT. Uma Thurman has the same haircut in Pulp Fiction as the leading lady in Masculin Feminin.
Oh, and also, the lead is played Jean-Pierre Laud of The 400 Blows fame. Not having seen the other films in that series yet, I thought it was pretty cool to see him as an adult. You probably already knew that, but I just felt like mentioning it anyway.
