Not necessarily because of sex or violence, but movies that really take a lot out of you when you watch them. The Deer Hunter is a great movie, for example, but as much as I love it I just can't watch it more than once every 5 years - maybe more. Name some others that you feel qualify.

The first two that pop to my head are Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream. Both movies that I rate very highly, and wanted to watch immediately after seeing them, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I saw Requiem the first time almost a year ago, and I still haven't seen it again. The first time I saw Clockwork Orange, I rated it a 2/5 on Netflix. The farther I got away from it though, the more I liked it. I even called it one of my favorite movies to someone, without thinking about it. The second time I saw confirmed how great it is, but it's still a seriously intense movie, and not the easiest thing to watch.

Requiem For a Dream certainly applies here. I liked the movie and bought it a short while after seeing it, but I think I only watched it once in all the time I owned it.

I'll second Requiem and Irreversible for sure. Great movies, but I couldn't watch them everyday. I used to be able to throw on Kids like it was nobody's business but for some reason lately I find of find that one to be draining. Maybe it's because I'm older and got some distance from it, I'm not entirely sure why.

Kids is a horror movie to me, and a really scary one at that.

I used to watch it all the time with my friends like it was nothing.

Personally, I could watch Children of Men every week. It has a great sense of humor in it, along with the more serious stuff, which makes it more digestible, at least for me. I might say Pi also fits in here, which means Aronofsky is one fucked-up, but very talented, guy.

To save it, I just saw The Assassination of Richard Nixon for the second time, and although it's not as heavy as some of the others that have been mentioned, it is pretty intense. It's painful to watch Penn throughout the entire movie, and the last few minutes are twisted.
