"Jonathan Liebesman, director of the upcoming "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, is in negotiations to direct the remake of horror classic "Friday the 13th" for New Line Cinema.

"Friday" made Jason, the unstoppable hockey mask-wearing killer, a 1980s horror icon, though the serial killer made only a brief appearance in the final frames of the first movie. Jason didn't even don the famous mask until the third movie.

Jason will wear the mask for the remake, written by Mark Wheaton, which will incorporate components of the franchise's films. The setting will be that of the first movie, Crystal Lake.

Liebesman is wrapping production on the untitled "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" prequel, which, like the "Friday" remake, is produced by Platinum Dunes for New Line.

A Friday the 13th does fall in October this year, and there was speculation that the movie would be made quickly to capitalize on that. But Platinum Dunes and New Line already have scheduled the "Texas Chainsaw" prequel for release that month, on October 6. "Friday" will be a 2007 release."

Why would they change the whole storyline and have Jason wearing the mask in the remake? Better yet, why are they making a remake of such a terrible movie? Firday 1+2 sucked because they focused around Jason's mother more than anything.

Why doesn't this guy direct an original idea?

Is it really that hard to think of a new horror movie storyline?

is it a remake or a prequel, because 2 days ago i read it was going to be a prequel, which would be pretty damn sweet if done right.

How could there be a prequel?

Jason was a little kid in the first one.

This movie is a classic that should not be tampered with.

to see how jason became JASON.

he died when he was 9, and suddenly this 7 foot adult is running, no walking, around killing people? Where does he get his power from, whats his motivation? shy the fuck can people run away from him at full speed but he can casually stroll along and be wherever the victim ran to way before?

these are importnat questions damnit

An old HORROR movie no less. Imagine that. As you can imagine, I'm less than thrilled about this. Friday the 13th was one of the few series left untouched during this latest bout of remake mania and it should stay that way. Do another Freddy vs. Jason or F13 sequel but don't go back and start all over, it's the worst thing you could do.

One of the real appeals of this franchise is that the sequels are actually better movies (and by this I mean more violent and fun) than the early ones. An origin story is pointless too, since the fact that Jason is an unstoppable monster and we don't know why is part of the fun. You don't need to know why, it's part of the mindless fun.

I knew it was just a matter of time.

Although I have to say, I am mildly interested in the TCM prequel.

I've heard it would be a prequel. And to further prove my nerdiness, I have to point out that Jason wasn't in the first one. The scene in which he popped out of the water was a dream.

He has directed an original movie. That movie being Darkness Falls. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

I remember reading about a year ago that Tarantino was looking into directing the final installment of the Friday the 13th series... although i dont recall ever hearing about a remake of the original until a few days ago

Yeah. You are right that was a dream. She never got pulled down in the water. He didn't kill that chick until part II.
