looks like Pacino will be recycling his performance from The Recruit.

and Heat and Scent of a Woman....
I would exclude Heat from his "mailed in" performances. Sure he did the yelling and ranting and raving...but the scenes with the wife and Natalie Portman added a little depth to the character.
I WILL add Devil's advocate and Any Given Sunday to that list...

i don't think he mailed it in for Heat either but his "Great Ass!" persona seems to be the norm for his acting these days. And to think i forgot about the 2 movies you mentioned. All that said, i'll be seeing this movie. My dream in life is to become a guy who gets paid by other gamblers to make picks. A little research won't hurt

Good movie, not great, not bad, but still pretty good. Here are the positives: Pacino was the best I've seen him since Heat. I'd even say that he is better in this movie than he is in Heat. Actually he was better in Donnie Brasco but i'm not gonna get into that. He completely carries the movie. He's not the off the wall joke from all the movies mentioned before in this thread. he's nutty but he's not as over the top as he is in the ones mentioned. He also has some CLASSIC scenes. His scene in the GA meeting is one of the best i've seen in quite awhile. I don't want to give away that much but he puts on a clinic in a couple of scenes and when this film is seen when it comes out on DVD i bet you'll recognize them as brilliant. I also liked the way they portray the gambler basically living on every game. How a last secong "meaningless' TD can mean s a shitload to the gamblers. The movie has more good moments than bad.
Here's the bad: There are a lot of holes in the script as far as how the Matthew McConaheyeeeiieyy character all of a sudden gets this job after a few great weeks of picking games. Also the way they make commission from the gamblers is sketchy. I also hated the way Matt McC picks his games. He doesn't even watch the games half of the time. He just seems to have a "feeling" which is annoying. The Rene Russo character is pretty lame but i like how her character ended the movie.
I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10. If you know nothing about gambling then you shouldn't bother seeing this movie. If you know a little about sports gambling then i think you'll overlook the little holes in the script. if you like Al Pacino you will be sucked in by his classic moments. I'm looking foward to renting this movie and enjoying him some more. I thought i liked Matt McHick but i just don't think he played the part as well as he could. He did look hot though if you want to bring your woman(although i doubt any woman other than my wife would want to see this) I paid $4 to see this and am happy I did. Rent it or catch a matinee.
