So from seeing those really old Simpsons shows, and how different the characters looked (and sounded.) I kind of always assumed that the pilot of a show was always pretty different from what the show ends up being. But last night I seen the pilot episode for King Of The Hill, and it was totally the same formula as the show was like 5 years later or whatever. I found that kind of interesting.

I'd argue the pilot of The Simpsons (usually considered the first xmas special, although you could argue it's the Tracey Ullman skits) is pretty damn close to what the show was in its prime.

I disagree. Watching the first season of the Simpsons feels like watching a completly different show then what it eventually evolved into, which is a good thing. The animation of course was inferior, but just the whole structure of it and the way the episodes played out, even the way the characters acted was different. Of course it has gone down hill since its prime.
King of the Hill has been very consistant. The animation got a small facelift, but outside of that it is hard to tell an old episode from a new one.
Unfortunately for Family Guy, their first few shows (including the pilot) weren't as funny as the ones that followed...but compared to the new batch that are coming out now...those originals are hilarious!

Yeah I seen one of those old Family Guy ones, kind of disappointing.

I agree the first season as a whole is different. However, I believe that first xmas special holds up and truly encompasses what was great about the Simpsons.

How different was the pilot?
the very early episodes have a different feel. kramer is more low key, there is no elaine in the pilot, george is less pathetic
George is the stable one with an actual job.
yup.
not to mention jerrys apartment is totally different, kramers name is "kessler", and he has a dog. and episodes focused around one storyline, instead of 2 or 3 different ones tying together in the end.

And there was a different actor playing his father. Thank god they recast that.
