Greatest movie ever?
I have just recently seen this classic for the first time ever, and I am curious to hear (read) what the rest of RM has to say about it.
To me, the actual story itself, while good, was far from amazing. As veiwer I never felt much of a connection to any of the characters, and I never had any sympathy for Mr Kane.
But the actualy filming itself blew me away. Every single shot, everyshadow, every single frame was absolutely perfect. I could have watched the whole thing without hearing any dialogue and still have had a gist of the mood of the characters.
and I didn't get the parakeet towards the end...

I didn't see the last couple minutes of this film due to queer circumstance however I heard the final thing was like his sled in a fire or a snow globe or something. At the time it was enough for me to move on. Now I sit here feeling "wtf".

It's definitely one of the greatest technical achievements in the history of film, though I do agree with your feelings of disconnection. It never really hit me emotionally.
Still, it's a very, very good film, and it gains a whole new perspective when you learn about its history with William Randolph Hearst. Welles was such a rebel.

If you ARE serious, The Shawshank Redemption is conventional static compared to Citizen Kane. Everything else on that list I'm still assuming is a joke.

this is one of my favourite movies. it's just astounding, and very interesting when you read about hearst, as LV mentioned. plus it's from 1941. i mean, jesus.
