Study: Fewer Gay TV Characters in Upcoming Season
Aug 21, 1:39 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Nine homosexual characters are depicted in network-TV series scheduled for the 2006-07 season, a decrease from last year's 10, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said Monday.

Out of 679 series lead or supporting characters on the six major broadcast networks in the new season, roughly 1.3 percent are gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to the group's annual study. The figure last year was 1.4 percent.

GLAAD analyzed the 95 prime-time comedies and dramas announced by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CW and MyNetworkTV.

While the year-to-year numbers are relatively consistent, the prominence of the roles has been diminished, GLAAD found, with the exit of shows like "Will & Grace," "Out of Practice" and "Crumbs."

The nine gay or lesbian characters appear on eight different series.

New series GLAAD counted as "inclusive" include comedies "Help Me Help You" (ABC) and "The Class" (CBS), and dramas "Brothers & Sisters" (ABC), weeknight telenovela "Fashion House" (MyNetworkTV), and CW midseason entry "Hidden Palms." These join returning comedies "Desperate Housewives" (ABC) and "The Office" (NBC), as well as the drama "ER" (NBC).

The five series with recurring gay, lesbian or bisexual characters include the new comedies "Ugly Betty" and midseason arrival "Big Day" (both ABC). These join returning comedies "The Simpsons" and "The War at Home" (both Fox), and the drama "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC), the study found.

"It's clear that the broadcast networks have a long way to go before they accurately reflect the diversity of their audience and our society," said GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano.

Their whole argument is that they want gays to be accurately represented on television as they are in society. i wonder if GLAAD would appreciate a tv show portraying gays as they are treated in east tennessee?

Will and Grace ended. The fact that there are any gay characters left should be considered a blessing.

You really should try to avoid fluctuation in the number of gay individuals on television. The actual number of gay people in the world remains constant, so should their representation on television.

Haha.

Seriously, though. What is the percentage of homosexuals in the American population? I'm too lazy to look.

I am too, but I can guarantee that the 10 to 9 drop this season means JACK SHIT!

Do they take into account characters whose sexual preference is not made known during the show.

Okay, according to the statistic I found...1.5% of American's are gay/lesbian/bisexual.

So, yep. TV is screwing them over by 0.2%

And I still think that stat is way low.

Not according to all the statistics that i've read.

You think 1 out of every 10 people are gay?

That's crazy.

I don't know about where you live, but I thought 1-2 out of 100 was a little high.

I would have to believe the gay community would be thrilled that will and grace is off the air, the biggest show in history to take every single homo-stereotype in the book and drain every ounce of humor from them. gay cannot possibly want straight folks to think THATS really how they act, do they?
