I really like the guys art, but having to see his pictures on horrible prints in the bedrooms of every college sophomore, has made his work annoy the living hell out of me.

is it the bad prints or college sophomores that bothered you?

i used to go out w/ a girl who's sister had tons of dali books and alot of explination about what the paintings mean and what was going on in dali's life at the time.
im looking at the first picture and thinking the lake in the background rose up and swallowed everything in the second picture. but last night i was thinking the first is from the male perspective and the second is from a womans. i bet they have to do w/ his wife though. i think all of his paintings are about his wife.

And I know that it will be interpreted as many to be elitist, but I'm just so fucking sick of hearing about him from pseudo-intellectuals. They've got a print of Persistence, read a half-page bio on Dali on some website and suddenly they're fucking scholars.
I love most of the man's work and his imagery, but the fact that he's become the poster-artist (literally and proverbially) of choice for lame pseudo-counter-culture kids on college campuses nationwide makes his stuff a bit difficult to appreciate at times.

I like Dali, my friend has a "Metamorphosis of Narcissus (sp?)" framed above his dining room. Supposedly, a technique Dali used was to hold a coin over a bucket, sit in a chair, and wait to fall asleep so that when he did he'd drop the coin and wake up to paint whatever was in his mind during the dream-state.
Eric, you need to check out Un Chien Andalou. It was mostly Luis Bunuel's work but Dali played a significant role. Its one of the most influencial things ever put to celluloid.

I find him intellectually stimulating and respect him immensely. But he doesn't have the arresting effect I get when I see a painting by Monet, Chagall or Picasso. Those guys can take my breath away. Dali can't. Then again, I haven't seen many of Dali's masterworks first hand.
The Dali Universe in London is excellent. Wish I'd had more than 2 hours to see it.

Strongly suspect he had hot, steamy sex with his mother.
