I'm so hooked. I think season 3 is better than 2. Some very fine television indeed!

At Bill Simmons' urging, I think I'm going to start watching this show.

Yeah, this show is pretty damn good. I didn't become addicted until about halfway through the first season (I'm currently on episode 9), but I've gone on a downloading frenzy and downloaded seasons 2 and 3. I'll probably get through them in about a week.

I think my favorite scene thus far was with Bunk and McNulty figuring out how that woman got shot in the kitchen with dialogue consisting of nothing but derivations of the word, "fuck."

Past that, I think the writing and acting on this show is some of the best I've ever seen in a television series. Outstanding from top to bottom.

I watched the first 5 episodes this past weekend. Wow, it's a really great show, and I'm really impressed with HBO. I need to catch up on the wire, and then watch Rome, the Sopranos, and then Deadwood.

That can be easily remedied.

You want to write me a check? It will be worth it for more Wire...

No, just steal cable from your neighbors.

No, just steal cable from your neighbors.

Doing that, would I be contributing to the ratings for HBO?

Here's what you do. Call your cable company on a Thursday and tell them you want digital cable and HBO. Watch The Wire on Sunday. Call your cable company on Monday and cancel all service.

They'll either a) offer you a deal or b) say "o-tay!" and cancel service.

Repeat this process on the following Thursday until season 4 ends.

But - and I'm going through this with internet at home - it will take them several days, possibly weeks before they're able to come "install" the cable. Then, once I cancel it, they will need to come "install" it again, taking another several days/weeks. Then the process is repeated, so I won't ever be sure if I will have it for the following Sunday.

Can you just mail it to me VHS?

Ratings for Sunday’s season premiere were weak, but reviews were strong to very strong, and HBO has given “The Wire” its fifth season.

You're welcome.

September 7th
PLEASE WATCH SOMETHING FOR ME

This Sunday, the 10th, at 10pm is the 4th Season premiere of HBO’s The Wire.

This is my favorite show on TV and, I think, the best show ever on television. I own the first three seasons on DVD, and I’ve watched each of them several times. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever seen on television to a big, thick, compelling novel, the kind you can’t stop reading. Like The Stand, or Freedomland, or Blood Meridian.

Chris Albrecht, the head of HBO, says that “[the filming of a] fifth season depends on how many people watch this season.”

David Simon, who created the series, always had a five season arc in mind. Each season would deal with a larger problem facing our cities and, in a bigger sense, America.

The first season was about the police and the “drug wars”. The second season dealt with the death of the working class. The third season dealt with politics, and this new season deals with the school system. The fifth season, says Simon, will deal with the media.

If they get to do it. The Wire is notoriously hard to just “jump into,” but this fourth season, which follows the paths of four school kids (along with the rest of the cops, pushers, junkies, politicians and citizens we’ve come to love and hate during the first three seasons) is more user-friendly.

This will be the unfunniest blog I ever write.

Look, here’s a picture of me with actor Robert Wisdom, who plays “Bunny” Colvin, a police officer who has one of the most lucid, and earth-shaking, nervous breakdowns in television history in Season 3. And yes, he’s back in Season 4.

Image

I’m flat-out begging you, all of you, to watch this season. PLEASE. In fact, even if you DON’T watch it, could you tune your TV to HBO at 10pm Sunday night? Just for an hour? Just to give this show the ratings?

Yes, I’m asking you to do this for selfish reasons. I want to see season 5. And I promise you, if you go back and watch the first three seasons (only 13 episodes each!) you’ll want this to go five seasons.

I don’t want to ruin the thousands of little and big surprises this series holds in store for you. If you’re going to go back and watch the first four seasons, then I envy you getting to watch them for the first time. And if you’re going to jump in this Sunday, the 10th, I can promise you—you won’t be disappointed.

I’ll say this: The Wire is one of the few times you’ll watch TV and not feel like the people making TV think you’re a fucking idiot.

It’s a difficult, grim, uncompromising show that will leave you feeling really good.

I just finished season 2 and still read that post. I guess it does have a spoiler.
