Critics Revolt at 'Marie Antoinette' Screening

Many Cannes attendees had been forecasting that Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst, would turn out to be the sleeper at the festival. After an early screening for the press today (Wednesday), many agreed that it was a sleeper all right -- but in the wrong sense of the word. A thunder of boos erupted when the closing credits appeared, followed by a smattering of applause. At a news conference, Coppola insisted that she had intended to make a film that reflected life at the court of Versailles prior to the French Revolution and the life of the young queen in particular. She insisted that the film had no political intent (even though it argues that the French revolution was caused in large part by the costly decision of the king to send troops to America to support the colonists' revolt against the British). One reporter observed that it seemed ironic that $40 million had been lavished on a movie that depicts royal decadence. Co-star Steve Coogan responded that $40 million does not represent a decadent film budget.

If nothing else, I'd boo the casting.

The only role I've liked Dunst in is in Eternal Sunshine. I thought she played her character well. Not that it was an incredibly meaty role, but still. Everything else I think she's subpar in. Simply there.

Sofia Coppola is overrated. She should go back to acting.

hahaha what the fuck? Just watched the trailer. What is with the music haha? You would figure some orchestra, but you get a 80s tune. Well whatever, it made me laugh and KD looks hot when she is laying down with the fan in her hand, ill see it.

And since there is a message about the french revolution and America and the fact that the art of the film title looks like it came off of the cover of a "sex pistols" album, I bet it's about anarchy in the USA! I'd bug sof's telephones.

Kirsten is no Meryl Streep. But she was good in Interview with the Vampire. But she was 10 years old.

She always seems to look dirty and unwashed to me.

I thought she was okay. Film's good, though. Oh, and I forgot about Interview w/the Vampire. Yeah, she was good in that.

Fuck the Cannes critics. I've been excited for this since the first teaser, and I'm still excited as all hell.

Oh yes and this is from the book review which the film drew inspiration:

"The moving final chapters show Marie Antoinette gaining in dignity and courage as the Revolution stripped her of everything, subjected her to horrific brutalities (a mob paraded the head of her closest female friend on a pike below her window), and eventually took her life."

Too bad that's not gonna be in the film. I guess that's what you get for being a rich stuck-up bitch.
