Julie Taymor's Titus is an excellent adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. Anthony Hopkins just chews up the script in this.

Penny Marshall directs entertaining movies for the most part, and Awakenings is a good film.

And I thought Catherine Hardwicke did a good job with Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown.

There have been a few here and there throughout history, none of them were narrative filmmakers strangely enough. I can't recall any female documentarians but Maya Deren did some pretty good experimental work in the 30s and 40s:

Mary Harron she directed "American Pyscho", I think that's it though, along with some tv shows.

Seriously, the chase scene in that movie is pretty cool.

Amy Heckerling is the only other female director I can think of who hasn't already been mentioned.
