Generally, I feel that SNES was a much better system. The controller opened up more possibilities, Mario eats Sonic, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Street Fighter games were significantly easier to play, better graphics overall...
Genesis might have had better sports games and Mortal Kombat had blood. Toe Jam & Earl was a cool game too.

What do you think?
If you got the six-button controller for the genesis the control in the genesis SF was ten times better.
I like both systems about the same though.
Overlooked Genesis games:

true. it does suck with the 3 button one though... having to press start to alternate between punches and kicks was awkward and inconvenient.
The SNES was the first video game console I ever had. Action/adventure and rpg games were both strong points for the snes and genesis. Graphics wise, i'd say the snes was on top, it has more color and wasn't as blocky. I liked that genesis games had voice clips, the snes rarely did.
Standout games on the snes were Super Mario World, Gradius III, Street Fighter II, Mario Kart, Zelda, Final Fantasy 2 & 3, and Metroid, to name a few. For the genesis, gunstar heroes, Strider, Mortal Kombat, Hellfire, Herzog: Zwei, Phantasy Star, and Sonic.

Nintendo has always been ahead of the curve. I had both and it wasn't even close.

Very close. SNES probably had better controls and such, but Sonic was (IMO) better than any other sidescrolling game ever. The Sega Channel was an amazing technological advance, years ahead of its time, and as of now it has yet to be replicated (although Xbox live is moving in that direction).
General Chaos was a cool Genesis game, one I used to play on Sega Channel often.

Sega's sports games absolutely destroy SNES.
It really does come down to this. If you preferred character based games, SNES was probably better, but Sega owned with the sports games. I didn't have much of a choice in the matter 'cos my dad got me a Mega Drive (Genesis) for my birthday, and I loved it. But I had a friend with a SNES and we'd pick houses based on what games we felt like playing.
Sega went off the rails after that, though, as everyone knows.

marketing wise yeah. the playstation really displaced them out of the "cool gamer" market. there are still some of my favorite games ever on the saturn (panzer dragoon series, virtua fighter 2, guardian heroes) and the dreamcast (Jet Grind Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, the best console versions of MDK2, Quake 3, Tony Hawk 2)

A true fan, folks. Saturn and Dreamcast. That's what you call loyalty.
