Toss up between Catcher and Gatsby, Catcher had the biggest influence on American literature and in our overall writing. The idea of feeling like an outsider, lost in the world has been used countless times. Gatsby was, well, just fucking good and it's the best work in my opinion about the American dream.

Catcher is one of my favorite books, and Gatsby is excellent.
To Kill a Mockingbird takes the top spot for me.

Ok, but the question was what is the best American written novel, not the one that had the greatest influence. Catch-22 and All The King's Men's style of prose is, in my opinion, far superior to that of Catcher. Not only that, but both novels involve a complex storyline that ties together completely in the end, so that every little occurance has a deeper meaning, a feat that Catcher doesn't even come close to.
