Which do you prefer?

I tend to see Lost as heading towards intentional confusion, while something like Primer would rate as extreme complication. Not dissing either, I know Lost has to keep it interesting for longer than 2 hours.

Complication.

Complication.

It's one thing to introduce confusion, but without a clear idea of where the story is headed, you're just writing yourself an enormous headache, and losing your audience in turn. It may be intriguing for a while, but if you don't have some idea of what your story's/characters' arc is, you're in trouble. Sometimes it's fun "to see where the characters take you" but more often than not, it turns into a complete mess.

complication is harder to do as a writer, and i think its more involving as a viewer

confusion is just not telling the audience what's going on, but that can be used effectively to put the viewer in the characters state at times so that's good too

i perfer complication, though if you're a writer for entourage you'll often take the easy way out when it gets complex

When its done right, which doesn't happen often, I prefer confusion.
