My 9 year old wants to watch something good. I can't think of anything that is a little scary, but not too scary.

Remember the Monster Squad? Something like that is what I'm thinking.

The Neverending Story scared me some at that age. Thought it had its moments.

Its weird, it still "scares" me, because when I watch it, I recall my childhood reactions to it. Certain films do that to me, The Elephant Man being another one. Oh, and Empire Strikes Back, but instead of fear, wonder.

If Kubrick had delivered this movie, as is, it would be praised as brilliant. The big difference is that Spielberg emerses the viewer in the world, and Kubrick always forced a detachment between the viewer and the film. We're observing, instead of there.

It's a frustrating film, bits of brilliance and tons that don't work. Everybody gets worked up over the "feel good Spielberg ending" with the aliens (hint; theyre not aliens, they're highly advanced mechas) and to me the ending is not happy at all, its pretty tragic, and my favorite section of the movie.

The paranormal, the mysterious unknown, and especially spiritual matters like the antichrist and demonic possession have always frightened me. And to this 7 year old, upon realizing that the beast, the devil himself, made the 2nd story of that home his domain with Caroline his captive, that sealed it for me. Terrified.
