Character actor Bruno Kirby, 57, dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bruno Kirby, a veteran character actor who co-starred in "When Harry Met Sally," "City Slickers" and many other films, has died at age 57, his wife said Tuesday.

Kirby died Monday in Los Angeles from complications related to leukemia, according to a statement from his wife, Lynn Sellers. He had recently been diagnosed with the disease.

"We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from Bruno's fans and colleagues who have admired and respected his work over the past 30 years," his wife said. "Bruno's spirit will continue to live on not only in his rich body of film and television work but also through the lives of individuals he has touched throughout his life."

Kirby was perhaps best known for his roles opposite Billy Crystal in 1989's "When Harry Met Sally" and 1991's "City Slickers."

Other film credits included "Good Morning, Vietnam," "The Godfather: Part II" and "Donnie Brasco." More recently, he played Phil Rubenstein on the HBO series "Entourage."

Great actor. He was in so much but never really got his due. My favorites from him were the basketball coach in "The Basketball Diaries" and of course a young Clemenza in "The Godfather II".

That frame from the movie is iconic.

I read about this last night, very sad.

Another minor role of his was the limo driver in Spinal Tap who was trying to talk to them about Sinatra.

"Fucking Limeys". One of the best parts of the movie.

If anyone seriously is a big Bruno Kirby Fan, seek out his 2-3 episode guest spot on Homicide:Life on the Street. I think its in season 5 (but it could be 6).. its fantastic.

Always liked this guy. he didn't have much depth but was very good at what he did. I never had a complaint with his acting in any movie i've seen him i and he shined in a lot of them. RIP Young Clemenza

Whoa. I just saw him in a bookstore not more than two months ago. I said to my girlfriend...there's that guy from Good Morning Vietnam. Crazy.

R.I.P. Bruno.

Yeah, his pairing with Billy Crystal in City Slickers and When Harry Met Sally provided some great comedy.

I also liked him in The Freshman with Brando and Matthew Broderick and Brando's right hand man in a straight up parody of the Godfather.

RIP Bruno, you will be missed.

I will deeply miss Bruno Kirby. Good Morning Vietnam and Spinal Tap were awesome. But is absolutley hilarious and has an oustanding sense of humor in City Slickers (my favorite!) Goodbye dear friend. You WILL be missed.

I remember years ago when Bruno was on The Tom Snyder Show and he mentioned certain restaurants in Philly. I'll always think of him as the young Clemenza, but he was much more talented than people give him credit for. RIP, Bruno.
