I just watched Dodgeball, which I liked. It was funny. A good time. But I have to wonder why Vince Vaughn is stuck doing nothing but dumbass comedies these days? I think he's a really good dramatic actor. He was great in some earlier, lower-profile stuff that he did. Clay Pigeons, Return to Paradise, and The Cell all stand out as really nice performances. And his Swingers role wasn't overly dramatic, but it was really good, nonetheless. I never saw the Psycho re-make and as much as I'm against even attempting to re-make anything Hitchcock, I can imagine he could play a creepy-as-fuck Norman Bates.
I checked IMDB and he's got a lot of stuff in the works, almost all of which looks like dumb comedy, although he's got the lead in one drama, "The Sky Is Green".
So, why is he now trapped strictly in all these goofball comedies? I'd really love to see him get back to more serious roles.

I hated him as Norman Bates...no way he compares to Perkins

I liked him in "Made" and "Swingers"...I can't stand Ben Stiller, so I didn't see "Dodgeball" but I like Vince Vaughn and I've wondered the same thing...I would prefer to see him working with Jon Favreau again..

my guess - he got into the mainstream acting game late, so he has no qualms going for the goofball comedy that pays very well instead of the serious drama that offers credibility but a crummy payday.
Maybe it's what it likes to do. I know I would be incredibly happy to be able to just make "fun" movies, while getting paid a shitload for it.
Maybe. I dunno. He just seems too talented to get stuck on this stuff. It's not like serious films don't pay at all. The guy would still have a mansion in Beverly Hills.

I see your point. I think a lot of it has to do with pressure as well. The comedies he's in are typically ensemble pieces, meaning that he'll be able to have fun being in a lot of scenes, but won't have to worry about carrying a whole picture. I can't imagine the pressure of being the lead role in a Hitchcock remake, for example. Of course, some actors thrive on this type of pressure and enjoy really demanding films, but some of them prefer ensemble work where it's just fun to do. I think Vince Vaughn may be in a phase like that right now, and you'll start seeing some different roles from him later on.

Yeah, definitely a good point.

I'd bet on it. There's a lot of actors who have either started out doing comedies or gone through stages of mostly comic work who've evolved to more serious roles as they got older and more experienced. Two that come to mind immediately are Tom Hanks and Jim Carrey. Both actors who made their names doing comdies and have gained lots of respect and ability to take risks as their careers have evolved. Vince has already done some serious work, and I think he'll definitely start exploring a lot wider range and depth of roles as his career progresses further.
Also, Vince is often seen as a "funny guy" by a lot of people, even though he's able to do so much more than that. Sometimes a lot of who you are as an actor is determined by what people want to see you as and what you know you'll be sucessful at. It's the reeally great actors who are able to either avoid those perceptions from the start or break free of them through taking risks.

I think he gets to help write a lot of his recent roles, where he can be himself and totally fuck around with it. Opposed to a drama where he is just reading a script.
