Poetic Realism or Nouvelle Vague?
Recommend me some Poetic Realist films and I'll tell you in a month. My heart will probably always lie with the New Wave though.

Port of Shadows (Le Quai des Brumes)
La Bete Humaine
Pepe le Moko
I've also heard Children of Paradise is incredible, but I haven't seen it yet. It's directed by Marcel Carne, who also directed Port of Shadows, and you know my opinion on that from the Classic Films thread. It's my next Criterion purchase. He also directed several other Poetic Realist films, including Le Jour Se Leve, which is my number-one most wanted film, but it's only available through that ridiculously expensive Janus box-set.
But yeah, you should definitely watch some Poetic Realism. New Wave would not exist without it.

Thanks. Totally unfamiliar with this era of French filmmaking.
