There's an excellent column/article on Lost in the latest Entertainment Weekly, by Stephen King. There's some notable stuff about X-Files and--indirectly--Alias as well. I haven't found it online yet or I'd have posted it.
It basically centers around great shows overstaying their welcome and crapping out (much like the X-Files after season 7, maybe even 6). King thinks Lost should call it quits after 3 or 4 seasons, and I think I agree with him.
There is only so much stringing along you can do with these mythology shows, and Alias is proof of how badly it can go when a show runs out of ideas and doesn't have a master plan. The X-Files seemed to have a master plan, but it stuck around too long because of it being Fox's "cash cow," as King puts it.
Anyway, worth seeking out to read.
