NEW YORK (AP) -- An unfinished tale by J.R.R. Tolkien has been edited by his son into a completed work and will be released next spring, the U.S. and British publishers announced Monday.
Christopher Tolkien has spent the past 30 years working on "The Children of Hurin," an epic tale his father began in 1918 and later abandoned. Excerpts of "The Children of Hurin," which includes the elves and dwarves of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and other works, have been published before.
"It has seemed to me for a long time that there was a good case for presenting my father's long version of the legend of the 'Children of Hurin' as an independent work, between its own covers," Christopher Tolkien said in a statement.
The new book will be published by Houghton Mifflin in the United States and HarperCollins in England.
J.RR. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings Trilogy" has sold more than 50 million copies and was also adapted into a blockbuster, Academy Award-winning trio of films. A stage version is scheduled to open next year.

I'll probably check it out, but I can't imagine it being too terribly good.
True. But I am morbidally into checking out a person's last work or music or movie etc. etc. to maybe feel a bit of what the person was, if only for a minute... I know that sounds pretentious and stupid, but that's me sometimes.
I'll check it out I'm sure, but I doubt I'll be running out the day it comes out to get it.

I absolutely loved LOTR, but I tried to read The Silmarillion after I finished reading the trilogy and I just couldn't get through it. I doubt that I'll check this out, although I have nothing but awe and respect for the man.

i've read The Silmarillion and at the time i though that was the most epic thing ever, but it's been a long and i don't remember much but if i'm not wrong the story of "The Children of Hurin" was the most tragic story in all The Silmarillion. In The Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth tthe story of "The Children of Hurin" is treated with more detail.

Really? I found Simarillion to be a quite easy reading.

the tale of hurin's children, or the Narn i Chin Hurin, relates the story of Turin Turambar and his sister Nienor. It is told is brief in the Silmarillion and parts of it were expanded upon in the Unfinished Tales. It's clear from the scope and beauty of the writing in the Unfinished Tales that Tolkien intended the Narn to be a major work, one of the centrepieces of the First Age mythos.
I can't wait to read this upcoming full version, even if the missing parts were completed by Chris from his father's notes.

A musical adaptation already ran in Toronto this year and failed miserably. Supposedly it's opening again in London.
