Very good flick. And the sequel, while not exactly a candidate for Best Picture, is somewhat underrated.

I watched this movie in the theater from the front row, neck craned backwards the entire picture, feeling like a booger in Vin Diesel's nostrils. I enjoyed it at the time, I never saw it on dvd or the sequel though.

Oh god, I thought both of these were terrible. Well, actually Pitch Black wasn't so bad as the way they did the night vision stuff was cool and Riddick was a fun character. Two was insanely awful.

Yeah, to say that the sequel spiraled out of control due to a story arc that had too many characters and separate story lines for the director would be an understatement. The first one was decent, a straightforward sci-fi horror flick. The thing is that the whole space opera thing is difficult to pull of, especially when you are attempting to turn a horror flick into a one.
