Everything's speculation at this point. Nobody's even started any kind of production on this. This is the studio thinking out loud about potential during interviews.

I'm torn on this one. While I would love to see Middle Earth realized on-screen again, the Hobbit is a much different tale than LOTR. It's whimsical and fun, nothing like the hope vs. despair tone of LOTR. yes, certain things happen in The Hobbit that set up events in LOTR, but it's very much it's own standalone story. I fear that it would be made to tie-in too much to LOTR, to become a "prequel," and it's really not.

Then again, Smaug on the big screen ... *faints.

I agree completely.

And two films? Why? This story is short and simple. 2.5 hours would probably be too long.

I agree. I see no reason why it would need to be more than 2.5-3 hours. The book is shorter than each part of LOTR, and there is less story to tell.

And yes, Smaug on screen would be a fucking blast.

I hope there are singing dwarfs

Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo hates -
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully! with the plates!

Two movies? That's just ridiculous.

This is the article:

Two Hobbit Films Planned
MGM touts twice the LOTR prequel action.
by IGN Staff
October 25, 2006 - MGM and New Line Cinema are moving ever closer to making J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit a big-screen reality. And now it seems that the studios may be planning not one, but two films based on the 1937 fantasy novel.

MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands revealed the plans this past weekend during a trade show in Orlando, Florida, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins on an adventure with a band of dwarves and the wizard Gandalf as they attempt to reclaim the dwarves' stolen treasure and restore their kingdom

This is the second time in the past month that Sands has publicly commented on the project. A few weeks ago, he issued a statement in response to a fan petition urging MGM and New Line to pursue Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson as the director of The Hobbit.

"Peter Jackson's phenomenal success with The Lord of the Rings trilogy makes him the first and most ideal choice for directing The Hobbit. MGM would be thrilled to collaborate with the Academy Award-winning director on this MGM New Line Cinema production," Sands said.

It should also be said that this film would suck if they can't get Ian McKellen to play Gandalf. A new Bilbo could be done, but Gandalf has to be the same.

With the amount of work he no doubt gets, I'm sure getting Andy Sirkis won't be a big deal. :P

McKellen is a must. I completely loved Ian Holm as Bilbo, and I wish there were some way possible to make that happen. But it most likely won't. Holm brought such nuance and life into the character, as much as McKellen did to Gandalf. Some of my favorite scenes in Fellowship are between Gandalf and Biblo.

Nope. The rights were still being fought over at that point.

It looks like Peter Jackson isn't directing the two movies. :(

New Line Passes on Jackson for The Hobbit
Source: TheOneRing.net November 20, 2006

"The Lord of the Rings" fansite TheOneRing.net has received an official statement from Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh about The Hobbit. The two have made it clear that New Line has passed them up, due to Wingnut Films' lawsuit against the studio regarding "The Fellowship of the Ring," and that the studio is looking for a new director to take on The Hobbit and a mystery second "Lord of the Rings" prequel. Here's a clip:

Several years ago, Mark Ordesky told us that New Line have rights to make not just The Hobbit but a second "LOTR prequel", covering the events leading up to those depicted in LOTR. Since then, we've always assumed that we would be asked to make The Hobbit and possibly this second film, back to back, as we did the original movies. We assumed that our lawsuit with the studio would come to a natural conclusion and we would then be free to discuss our ideas with the studio, get excited and jump on board. We've assumed that we would possibly get started on development and design next year, whilst filming The Lovely Bones. We even had a meeting planned with MGM executives to talk through our schedule.

However last week, Mark Ordesky called Ken and told him that New Line would no longer be requiring our services on the Hobbit and the LOTR 'prequel'. This was a courtesy call to let us know that the studio was now actively looking to hire another filmmaker for both projects.

Well, it still doesnt mean the films will be bad, but it's not a good sign. If these movies turn out to be shit, it will be the studios fault.

Looks like Ordesky's finally become a true studio exec.

The films might not be bad, but Weta is huge reason those films were as visually great as they are. Not just in terms of FX, but design in general. I'm not saying another art department/fx house would do a sub-par job, but those LOTR films are products and achievements of Wingnut & Weta, not New Line.

I think there's no way Ian Mckellen agrees to be a part of this without Jackson involved.

He did X Men 3 no problem, and with a big enough pay check he'll do the Hobbit movies.
