Finally some news. This is from darkhorizons.

On September 22nd a petition with 39116 signatures upon it was delivered to MGM & New Line. It's aim? For the studio to get Peter Jackson and whatever members of "The Lord of the Rings" cast & crew back for the studio's forthcoming adaption of "The Hobbit".

Now this past weekend, The One Ring received a letter from MGM, with an official statement from Rick Sands, the company's chief operating officer. Here it is in full:

"Peter Jackson's phenomenal success with The Lord of the Rings trilogy makes him the first and most ideal choice for directing The Hobbit. MGM would be thrilled to collaborate with the Academy Award-winning director on this MGM New Line Cinema production. And, I'm sure to the delight of the 50,000 filmgoers who have petitioned us in recent weeks, demanding we bring this film to fruition, we have had a few initial conversations about the project with Mr. Jackson's representatives."

What is this about MGM wanting to make THE HOBBIT with Peter Jackson?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Variety ran a piece today in which MGM's CEO, Harry Sloan, announced his tentpole flicks, one of them being THE HOBBIT with Peter Jackson, Sloan hopes. He also mentioned making a TERMINATOR 4, PINK PANTHER sequel (yech) and a THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR sequel.

As luck would have it, I interviewed Peter Jackson this afternoon. We talked about everything he's involved in and in the next week you'll see the interview go up in pieces, including one about THE HOBBIT. But he did say that he woke up this morning to see that MGM says he's making THE HOBBIT with them, which was strange. He said that as unbelievable as it may be, he's never once talked to any studio, be it New Line or MGM, about doing THE HOBBIT. So, as of today Jackson has not talked to anybody about doing the movie, but he did say he'd like to do it, even though his schedule gets more crowded every passing week. So, if MGM wants to do this thing it might be a good idea to see if Jackson is up for it, no?

As some might know, the rights to THE HOBBIT are kind of jumbled. If I have it right, MGM owns the distribution rights, yet somehow New Line owns the rights to make the film. Meaning New Line could make the movie, but couldn't release it. I'm thinking MGM is trying to partner with New Line in order to do this thing, which would be really cool if I don't say so myself. I'd love to see Smaug realized in the Peter Jackson LOTR universe.

I'm going to be busting my ass transcribing over the next couple of days, so stay tuned for more on the Peter Jackson front, including his exact words and further comments on THE HOBBIT

hmm...

IMO, if this movie is going to be made anytime before 2020, the only person who can direct it is Peter Jackson. Got to have as much of the same actors as possible, especially Gandalf. Bilbo doesn't have to be played by that same guy. If it's made in the near future without Peter Jackson, an entirely new cast should be used, to separate it from the original three movies, as much as possible.

Also, let me just say that no matter who makes it or is involved with it, there is a good chance that it will be a total disappointment.

Everything's speculation at this point. Nobody's even started any kind of production on this. This is the studio thinking out loud about potential during interviews.

I'm torn on this one. While I would love to see Middle Earth realized on-screen again, the Hobbit is a much different tale than LOTR. It's whimsical and fun, nothing like the hope vs. despair tone of LOTR. yes, certain things happen in The Hobbit that set up events in LOTR, but it's very much it's own standalone story. I fear that it would be made to tie-in too much to LOTR, to become a "prequel," and it's really not.

Then again, Smaug on the big screen ... *faints.

I agree completely.

And two films? Why? This story is short and simple. 2.5 hours would probably be too long.
