Those are played on emulators, with savestates to correct all mistakes and such. They are being played in low speed to make things easier aswell.

There are hundreds of these kinds of runs on http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/
There is also an improved version of Mario 3 there.

And one even better is coming soon.

I used to be able to beat Mario 3 in 20 minutes. I suppose the time above is reasonable.

I loaded up Kid Icarus the other day and finished it in a coupla hours - first time I'd touched it since the fifth grade. God I love those games.
