I don't think they wanted to leave a sense of mystery, just impending doom

It didn't evoke a sense of doom to me. Just "oh geez, another zombie movie.."

Spoiler: show: There is a good possiibility it could happen. They def get it on in the book. She is impressed that jon does what she calls the "lord's kiss" which is him perfoming oral sex for her. Evidently wildlings dont do that.
