Is this a great year for movies or what? I haven't seen a truly great movie year since 1999, but this really seems like one, judging from reviews and the early awards shows. There are more movies in theatres right now that I badly want to see than I can count on both hands, not to mention all of the really good ones from earlier in the year.

Honestly, I can't name any good ones. Eternal Sunshine was great, I heard Sideways is great too...otherwise, I can't really name any stood out.

Such as?
I'm not thinking of any standouts.

I can name on one hand movies that got more than 8 out of 10 for me this year-
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
2046
House of Flying Daggers
A Very Long Engagement
Somersault
So there's 2 Chinese films, 1 French film, 1 Aussie film and just the one US release. I'll be watching a fair few more before the year ends, but the American output this year has been quite disappointing.
Like I said, most of them are in theatres now and I haven't seen them, but from the reviews I've read, they all look very, very promising. I can't remember the last time I was so excited about this many movies at one time. I don't even know what to see first:
Closer
Sideways
Spanglish
Ocean's 12
Million Dollar Baby
Finding Neverland
Hotel Rwanda
Beyond the Sea
The earlier ones being:
Eternal Sunshine
Collateral
The Terminal
Ray
Birth
Spider-Man 2
The Bourne Supremacy
The Incredibles
They're not all Oscar winners, obviously, but a good mix of really good films, along with some great popcorn movies and just plain entertainment.

I have yet to see Collateral and Bourne Supremacy - still not a good year for movies though

Spider-Man 2 drags the entire year down to being very, very bad.
Still can't believe I paid good money to see that.
Come on. What did you expect? Spider-Man 2 is a good movie for what it is. It's certainly much better than the other genre-comparable movies of late (e.g., Hellboy, X-Men 2). Further, it is better than Spider-Man.
To go in to a comic book movie expecting something of Oscar proportions (not neccesarily assuming that that is the case here) is laughable...

Well...personally i thought that X-Men 2 was waaaaay waaaaay better than Spiderman 2. I actually found some excitement and was pleasantly surprised by the former, whilst being very disappointed even after having low expectations by the latter.

No.
After seeing Spiderman, it ended so well that I wished to God that they wouldnt make a sequel. I knew full well that they would though. And I knew it would suck. So I never saw it.
