I just saw this last night, and it really got to me. It's a 1994 documentary that follows two inner-city Chicago youths as they play high school basketball and dream about making the NBA. It becomes about a lot more than basketball, and is genuinely funny, sad, and triumphant, often at the same time. Amazing stuff.

The scene in the church where Arthur's dad starts singing and he has to leave made me shed a tear. The stuff about William's brother Curtis was really hard to take too. Both Arthur's father and Curtis were shot and killed a few years after the movie came out, which is even more sad. I feel like this must have been really influential to a lot of people.

it drags a little...but I guess that's unavoidable in a doc this long.
Love the cameos by Juwan Howard and Eric Anderson.

Yeah, I hadn't looked at the length and was thinking "this two hour doc is incredibly long." Very worth it though. I liked the Spike Lee cameo, myself.

The best documentary I have seen and maybe one of the best movies I have seen. Whats interesting about it is that when you make a documentary like this, you dont always know if anything will happen that will make it worth watching. In the case of this movie, way more happened than what would be expected.

I was thinking about that too. They had no way of knowing Arthur would have to leave St. Joseph's, for example, but what ended up happening and that dichotomy (success at a crappy school vs. failure at the good school) was one of the things that made it so interesting. That's really one of the things that can make or break a documentary--the things the filmmakers didn't plan on that happen outside of their control. In this case, it made it that much better.
