I like the second half. It has one of the greatest lines ever with the whole duality of man thing.

What a hard question. It took me a while to think of it.

These are in my top-20, except for Paths:

1. Strangelove
2. 2001
3. Full Metal Jacket
4. Paths of Glory (without the ending it drops to 10)
5. Shining
6. Clockwork

Good:

7. The Killing
8. Eyes
9. Spartacus

Not so much:

10. Lolita
11. Barry Lyndon

I haven't been able to find Killer's Kiss.

Am I the only person alive who thinks 2001 is boring and overrated? And don't waste your time lecturing me on how I didn't "get" it. I recognize all the "deep" meanings, the cinematography, being ahead of its time, etc. It's just okay.

How many times have you seen it? I only ask because I thought it was a bit boring and overrated when I first saw it, but after repeated viewings I found it to be absolutely brilliant.

About two and a half times. That third time I fell asleep, hence the half. I'm not saying it's bad. It's just slightly above average. Cinematography wise, it's excellent. Overall, I'm just not that into it.

It's my favorite movie ever, but I don't blame you for not liking it. A lot of people don't like Barry Lyndon for the same reasons, and I thought it was excellent.

I hated Barry Lyndon. The two have similar pacing, but 2001 is filled with wonder while all Barry Lyndon is filled with is pretty candles and bad acting.

Barry Lyndon had the feeling of a Charles Dickens novel, in that while I felt I was witnessing something great and did enjoy certain monents, on the whole it felt unnecessarily wordy and overlong.

I plan to go through the Kubrick dozen again at some point soon. I did it the first time in 1999 to prep for Eyes, and I've only watched Strangelove, 2k1, FMJ, and the Shining (every Halloween, with the original Dawn of the Dead) since then.

By the way, as far as 2001, I loved the movie until the end - the whole color segment is dated, and sticks out like a sore thumb during what otherwise would be the most brilliant wordless segment in the history of non-silent films. Most people who talk to me about hating that film point out that they thought it was weird and off, and I tend to agree -

- until, that is, I get blasted and time Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" to the background of the last segment. It runs to the second from the "Jupiter ..." title to the last frame of the space baby. Awesome.

Other than Spartacus, I've seen them all from The Killing through A Clockwork Orange. I have Barry Lyndon in my laptop ready to go and The Shining on my desk in waiting. Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut are in the library waiting as well. Right now, my top is Clockwork Orange, and I highly doubt that anything will be able to top it. I'll probably finish the rest within a week or so.

I just really liked Barry Lyndon for some reason.

I'd agree that the beginning and end portions of the trip sequence in 2001 look a little dated, but the middle part with the oozing formations still looks amazing to this day.

The only one I'd say that I didn't like is Barry Lyndon, though it is a beautiful movie and some scenes were good, but overall I don't think enough happened.
